What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I believe that IPC Media would be a realistic institution to distribute my media product. IPC Media publish a wide range of magazines, from Fashion, Music and Soap magazines. This means that they have connections with a wide age range and social groups, which will help to attract people to my magazine.

Even though IPC Media already have music magazines like NME, they don't publish a rock magazine which would cause rivalry between my magazine and an already existing magazine which they publish. This makes them more suited to distribute my product unlike a company like Bauer, who already publish Kerrang!. If I was to go with Bauer, there is a good chance that they would not help the advertisement of my product to there full potential as they already have a bestselling rock magazine. If they were to invest in my product, they would risk damaging the sales of Kerrang! IPC Media would expose me to a new and appropriate demographic and expand my audience to more people who it would appeal to as they already have a trusted relationship with readers on good quality magazines.

IPC Media have the power to get 'Rampage' distributed in major distributors like WHSmith or ASDA as they already have a number of magazines sold in these retailers. This means they have the potential to increase the popularity and revenue of 'Rampage' as major retailers like these are the main selling point for magazines. They could also expose my media product through advertisement. IPC Media has the key experience with advertising companies that would benefit the sales of 'Rampage'. If I was to go with a small independent publishing company or even start my own, this is something I would struggle with as I do not have the contacts or experience to advertise my product to its full potential, which could be incredibly harmful to the sales of my product.

With the rapid expansion of modern technology and social networks in today's society, IPC Media would be able to set up a website, YouTube channel and possibly an app to go with the magazine. In modern society this is how most magazines and publishers earn most of their money as more people prefer things to be online is it is easily accessible. This could also be an opportunity to appeal to more people. If I had a website it could include exclusive interviews which would persuade a wide variety of readers. Magazines like NME have a huge profile online which is a crucial part of their overall revenue. By using the internet it could result in my product being known Worldwide rather then just in the UK, this would expand my audience dramatically, which is something else I wouldn't be able to do if I self-published 'Rampage'.

Overall, by going with a major distributor, it will allow 'Rampage' to reach its full potential and possibly even more. By getting on the shelves in huge retailers and getting it recognised online, it will be fairly easy for it to become successful. If I was to Self-Publish, I would be taking a huge risk and possibly fail to get any sales. It is unlikely that I would do as well as a company like Clash, who only publish Clash magazine, as most titles fail within the first three years.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

Props/Location/Costume

For the location of my photos I have decided to use a photography studio. This is because I want to be able to ensure that I have sufficient lighting when taking the images that will be featured on my magazine. If I was to choose an outside location, then there is a possibility that my pictures may end up being a lower quality if the lighting is compromised by the angle of the sunlight. Also in a studio I am able to focus more on the model rather than the background. This relates to my readers as they would be more interested in the Artist on the cover rather than the scenery. Although, to have a range of images, I might use some from a live performance of a band/artist as this would appeal to my target audience. My target audience often spend a lot of their free time seeing their favourite bands/artists live, so I think it would work well on my magazine. It would also give my magazine a variety of images.

As for the costumes I want the fashion to represent my audience, therefore I will be using dark coloured clothes to reinforce stereotypes, as this is a characteristic that is commonly associated with my readers. Also by having dark clothes, it would work well with my colour theme of: Red, White and Black. This also means that the centre of attention will be focused on the models hair, face and makeup. For my props, I may use various chairs, so that I can get a range of images. By using chairs, it can allow me to have a range of poses ranging from soft, natural poses to more aggressive which will relate more to my target audience as they generally labelled to be quite angry.
